7A Oral History Reponse

In your reflection please answer the following two questions.
Make sure the Venn diagram provided to help you sort your ideas first. Then write them in your reflection.

1.What does your interview tell you about your parent's or guardian's civilization when they were young.

2.When you compare your life with your parent's choose two things that have remained the same and three things that are different.

19 comments:

  1. My parent's life back then was quite different from my life now. My mother was part of a big family and in the family house, there was her parents, six older sisters and one older brother. My mom was the youngest in the family. People thought her family were quite rich because they had the money to take care of all their children and educate them all. Her childhood was good and fun just like mine.

After completing the interview with my mother, I now understand that the civilization at the time where my mother was young was a lot more basic than mine. For example my mother's house did not have all the electrical devices that we take for granted. She did not have a computer, ipod, iphone, mobile phone etc.

When you compare my life with my mother's life, I am getting a good education as well. Although I don't have a lot of brothers and sisters, lot's of my family live in the same house.
Things that have changed over time are that my mother's family had to do all their washing by hand unlike us who have the luxury of a washing machine. Other differences are that my mother attended an all girls school, whereas I am in a mixed school. One other significant difference is that the neighborhood where my mother lived was in the countryside and there were grassy fields, rivers and canals. The neighborhood where I live at the moment is busy with cars, shops and some trees. It is not the countryside.

I have learned a lot from this interview and even though I like my life at the moment, I am sure that I would've also liked the life my mother had when she was young.

  2. My parents life back when they were kids was pretty different from mine. They lived in America in houses. They both had parents were considered middle class citizens. There life's were a lot different from mine but still fun.

A thing that has stayed the same in is culture(mostly the entertainment part), my parents like me did many thing from reading to sports to camping and lots of fun activities. There culture is also the same because we were raised the same way and we have the same beliefs in our family.
Another things that has stayed the same is writing its was extremely important back then as it is now, we write in the same language and for the same reasons.
Technology has also changed slot over the time, back they didn't have PSP and IPHONES or even computers but now we have all of that stuff and now technology is a way of life for many people but back then it most defiantly wasn't.
The large community groups feature has also changed a lot because back then they lived in houses but now there are apartments and where my parents lived there were many trees and not a lot of pollution and a very green atmosphere.
Architecture has also changed a lot because back then there weren't a lot of malls and very small shops but now there are many malls and huge buildings with shops.

When I interviewed my parents i learned all about there civilization, I learned about there culture and what they did for entertainment which is very important for me and that they were lucky when they were kids and I am very lucky as well. My parents technology was very simple but now its extremely complex and that even though they didn't have as much they were still very happy.

  3. My parent’s life when they were young was completely different to my life from now. My father's life was normal; he went to school to study. He was quite a small family because he only had a young brother but they both went to school. My mom had 2 brothers and 2 sisters she was the middle person. All of them went to school and got educated. Both my parent families were quite rich because they were able to afford money for transportations and school and other needs and wants. My Parents childhood were quite interesting because they had to sleep fast to wake up for school and they weren't allowed to buy things unless you get permission because they didn’t want to waste money. But there childhood still looked fun.

Two similarities for the way we lived are:

-Social structure in Thailand was popular back then. My parent’s and I have both great educations. We study at great schools.

-Literature and art was very popular back then as it is now a day, books and music especially. My mother and their families liked fantasy books mostly. My mom also listens to Michael Jackson songs as well as I do now.

Three things that are different for the way we lived are:
    - At my mom’s school the teachers that teaches there were very strict. If you were late for school you would get detention where as in these days now when we were late we didn’t get detention at all and the teachers were caring, kind and funny.
    - For technology in my mom’s age was really old fashion. The phones back then were really big like a shoes box. Only rich people could afford one of those phones because they were really expensive. As for now everyone uses phones, it was small and easy to use and cheaper than back then.
-For Large Community Groups in my moms place, she had lots of neighbors around and she used to play and run around with them and it was safe wherever she went. But now a day we weren’t allowed to go anywhere except with a guardian and I didn’t know anyone at all around my neighborhood.

What have you learned about your parent’s civilization by doing this interview?

I learned a lot about my parent’s civilization when I interviewed them. How their civilization was really basic and they had lots of things to do for example playing with there neighbors not only using electronic devices because they weren’t able to afford lots of phones. I learned that it was really hard to communicate back then because there wasn’t emails or phones to call or text or send letters to each other. I also learned about what they do everyday in their normal life and how there education was. I think I am very lucky and they were also lucky. I would be happy to try and experience their life about what they do. I really enjoyed interviewing my parent’s.

  4. Reflection
When my parents were young they lived in England. My Mum lived in Derby and my Dad lived in Leeds. My Mums first job was a nurse and my Dad's I do not know.
I think over time the technology has stayed the same because the people our day still build detached houses, Semi detached houses, normal houses and bungalows.I think the utilities people have used stayed the same because my parents used to write in pencil and ball point pens and now our generation is still using these utilities.
I know the writing style has changed over time because when my parents were kids they had to write in cusive. But in school I don't.
(Why did they change that rule?)
I think the type technology people use has changed over time because back in the olden days people used to use tape recorders and record players now we use laptops, projectors etc...
The last thing I want to say that has changed is about children's rights because when I wasn't born the children didn't have many rights and now we have the freedom of having our own rights such as asking a teacher why we had to do something.

  5. Reflection
When my mom was young she lived in a village that was sort of like a neighborhood and she lived in Thailand. The community was not very friendly but it was safe. Now we live in buildings and it’s not very safe. The transportations my mom used were cars, boats, buses, trains, and bicycles there weren’t that many transportations available back then. The transportations I use now are cars (more technology) speed boats, sky trains, planes that are faster and have more technology, sub way, better bicycles, and buses. Some of the laws back then were different like you didn’t have to wear a seat belt or a helmet but now you do and people used to be able to smoke anywhere (which was a bad thing) and now if you want to smoke you have to do it in a smoking area. Today in most countries there aren’t any kings or queens but there are presidents and governments but back then most countries where ruled by kings and queens. There wasn’t much technology back then and now there is so much. It makes life very easy because most things are automatic but when my mom was a kid you had to do everything by yourself and nothing was automatic it was all manual. With all the information I have my life is very different to my parent’s life when she was a kid.

  6. My mom was born during the 1970’s and her life was not as different as mine. She used to hang out with her friends and went on bike rides. She lived in a big house, like the ones we have now. Her system of government was also the same as it is now. However the laws were different, your house had to be fenced, you didn’t have to pick up after your dog and you didn’t have to wear a helmet on bicycles. The technology also has changed, the highest technology they had were; pocket calculators and L.C.D watches. The technology we have now is much more advanced we now have; phones, lasers and touch screen. The presidents have also changed over time. The presidents at her tie were “Georges Pompidou” and “Valery Giscard d’Estaing” now the president is “Nicholas Sarkozy”. From this comparison we can tell that France is a developing country.

  7. In 1984 when my Dad was my age he lived in a quiet New Zealand neighborhood called Blockhouse Bay. He lived with his mum, dad and sister. it was a middle class neighborhood with lots of green spaces, parks and schools. It also had a small shopping centre to help the community instead of going all the way into the centre of the city.
His mother, him and his sister were Anglican church goers. They went to church every Sunday morning. there were other Christian religions in the area and a minority of Jews, Muslims and Hindus. When Dad was older they also built a Mormon church in the area. This has stayed the same. In Blockhouse Bay today there is still a mixture of religions.
The laws were created based on Christian morals and were quite fair. Some laws were changed such as the age you could get a driver's license. One that effected my Dad was a fishing law - so he could not catch more than a certain amount, but the Maori people didn't have to obey this law because of the Treaty of Waitangi which was signed in 1840. Organized Government and Laws have stayed pretty much the same as this. They always take the treaty into account, and they sometimes change laws such as drinking age and driver's licenses.
Writing has changed . In primary school Dad learnt how to write with a pencil and in high school he wrote with a pen. He learnt to print and then later he learned cursive writing. Teachers used a blackboard and chalk. Today handwriting is still important but we use computers more and more often.
The Arts were not very important when Dad was at primary but at high school he had Art and Music classes. At NIST we get Art, drama and music classes from Year 1.
There was basic technology. Telephones had cords and you had to dial the number with your finger in the wheel. The television was black and white and there was no internet. Dad did not have much technology as a kid but did get a calculator in high school. Now students have their own computers and mobile phones. A calculator is not really something to look forward to!
I have learned that my Dad grew up without technology. He didn't learn about the Arts. Writing was important in a different way. The Government was richer and could do a lot more to help the country. I'm glad I'm growing up in the 21st Century.

  8. I interviewed my mom and I knew a lot more of different and similarities. I also learnt that now there was much better technology than in my parents time. In their time they had less convenience things than my time such as mobile phone.

    Similarities
There are two languages that I learned the same as my mom and dad. They are Thai and English. My parent and I found that English is very hard because Thai language has no present tense and past tense.
I play the same sport as my parent which are swimming and tennis. My mom and I also play piano. My mom and I found that piano needs a lot of practice because we have to have the right beat and rhythm.

    Differences
In my parents time there was only black and white television but now we have color television. Also we develop to have flat screen TV and also cable TV (UBC) with a lot of channels from over sea.
In my parents time the public transportation was bus, boat, taxi and tuk-tuk. But nowadays we have BTS (sky train) it makes us more convenience to travel inside the city.
In my parents time in school they have to use fountain pen, ink pens and pencil. Nowadays we have led pencil and roller pen. We have more variety of pens to decorate our work such as glitter pen and beautiful markers.

  9. My Mum lived in a city called Chandigarh. It was a very beautiful, green and well planned city. It was a very small city where everybody knew each other, and shared their time with each other. It was a very well planned city where the pace of life was very slow.
The similarities between my civilization in 2010 and my Parents civilization in about 1970, were that both of us spoke in English and Hindi. The other similarity was that that it was a democratic form of government which was of the people by the people and for the people. The government also provided free food, education and shelter for the poor.
The differences from my and my Parents civilization were that we listened to different types of music, my mum listened to jazz, Indian classical and film music while I usually listen to rock and hip-hop. Another difference was in transportation, because before there were cycles, motor-bikes and a few cars, but now there are mostly cars, motor-bikes and sky train. The last difference was that I lived in Bangkok while they lived in Chandigarh.

  10. I would say that my father's liver was ordinary. He was born in 1959.He went to St. Gabriel's School in Bangkok. When he finished, he went to St. John's University. After finishing, he opened a medicine manufacturing factory. He then got married and had me. That is my father's summarized story. He is now 51 years old. I am 12. We have a lot of differences and similarities.

A difference between my father's life and mine is technology. His "Ipod" was a portable radio. His television was a big black box with moving pictures in black and white. The phones then were big and heavy. Nowadays, there are all kinds of phones!
Another difference is my language. When he was young, he would have spoken thai the most because his school was a thai school, but because I am in an international school, I speak english the most, and is my preferred language. I speak english nearly everyday, with my parents and siblings.
The laws of the government has changed as well. Before, the police had the power to execute criminals by blindfolding them and tying them onto a post. Eventually, the police would shoot them the the heart. That law was called "Mor 17". I don't think the government does that now.

    Similaries

Although, we have some differences in life, we also have a lot in common. One similarity is our religion. I am a Buddhist, just like my father. we preform the same rituals, we go to the same temples, and we have use the same shrine room. Every night before I go to sleep, I would go to the altar in my house with my father, to pray. This altar is really special to me and my father because it has my grandfather's cremated remains.
Another Similarity is our taste of music. I would like to thank my father for introducing 70's music to me. without him, by now I would be a hip hop guy. We both love the same bands, for example, Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I have learn a lot about my family and myself during this task. I have learned that life is like a book. My book has just started, with around just a couple of chapters opened. My father's would be about half way. Every book has a beginning and an end, so I should enjoy my life while I still can.

  11. my mum was born in Poland. At the age of 6 she left and went to live in Switzerland. after My mum graduated she became a nurse than she work at MC Donald and than became a teacher for kids at 18 months old. She speaks English, French, Polish, German, ITalien and some Thai. I am twelve and she is 37.

    Similarities
the similarities between my and my mum civilization is it's culture. We both like to listen to music like rock'n roll music and some hip hop and we both liked going to concerts. The other thing that has stayed the same is it's social structure. The high class jobs were doctors, lawers and bankers this is the same as today. We have lots of things in common.

    Differences
The diference between my and my mum's civilization is it's laws. In those days people were allowed to smoke in public area's like bars, restaurants, disco and malls. But know a days people are not allowed to smoke in public area's. It disturbs people in those area's. The other Law that was different was in those days you could drink more before you drive. With this there were so many crashes and accidents that we had to change it a bit. now it is less drinking before driving. It was 0.8 but now it is 0.6 or 0.5 in some countries. The las difference that my, my mums civilizaion was that to communicate and to type something they used type writers and tele graphs. but these days there are computers. These type writers tele graph are combined to make a computer. computers can do more than just communicate and type you can show an image on a screen you can draw, make and go on the internet.

I understand how different and difficult it was for people that didnt' have what we have know. How low technology were at those days and how difficult to be some who doesnt' have what other people had.

  12. There is a slight difference between my life in 2010 and in my mom’s life in the 1980’s. My mom lived in a place called Shimla (In the northern part of India). It was a small city where everybody talked to each other and we knew each other.

    Similarities

The similarities between my life in 2010 and my mom’s life in the 1980’s were that we learnt how to speak Hindi and English. We both celebrate the same festivals and believed in the same culture.

    Differences

The Differences were that my mom had only a rickshaw to travel with but know the world has changed and we have BTS, Bus, Taxi, MRT, Tuk Tuk, Cars and motorbikes. Another difference was that my mom had to chant her schools anthem in their meeting point. The last difference was that my mom listened to slow and meaningful Indian music but I listen to Rap, Rock, Hip Hop music.

So I am very happy that I have a better and a more advanced life than the people in those days. I am very thankful to my parents that they can afford to make me life a good life.

  13. My mum lived in Chennai, India. It was a newly developed suburban township. The neighborhood was very small and people knew each other very well. My mum studied mechanical engineering. Although their life was calm and had nothing to entertain themselves they had a lot of fun enjoying their lifetime when they were young.
    Similarities
The things that stayed the same were the use of art in that time. Artist in that time almost had the same equipments as now in 2010. There were temples and churches nearby which made it easier for my parents to go and celebrate some religious festivals there. Here, now there are also temples where people do praying and celebrate some festivals.
    Differences
The differences from my and my parents civilization were that my mum’s place was very empty and there were no recreational places to entertain themselves although now I live in an apartment and there is a swimming pool, soccer field, basket ball court and a play ground which made my life very happy. The technology was very different from my time, my parents had a TV which was big and the color was black and white but now in my civilization there are LCD TVs, plasma TVs and LED TVs and I have a plasma TV which shows many colors and I also have a home theater. The last thing which was different was the transportation, my parents used only tuk tuk’s and taxi’s anyways if there is traffic they will get stuck in it. For me there are much transportation like bikes, taxi, tuk tuk and the best one is the sky train.
I have learned that my parents had a difficult time when they were young and I am very amazed that they had lived there and never got bored even though there were less things to entertain themselves.

  14. My Dad was born as middle class child, in a suburban town in Orissa, India in the 1970's and his childhood was quite different compared to mine, the big urban city of Bangkok, 2010. But there were a few similarities too!

Even though my parent's civilaztion didnt have as much of a technology based life back then, there were some positives to that. Like since they didnt have much technology, they didnt have as many cars and factories, and that meant less pollution. Even if there were cars, they were very expensive, so only a very little amount of people owned cars. Now, it is totally different! There are cars everywhere, which means nearly everyone owns a car, which means loads and loads of pollution. But having lots of variety and mass of transportation has its positive sides! Here in Bangkok, we have Sky Trains, Cars, Bikes, Trucks, Cycles, Tuk Tuks,Buses, Trains and Planes, but where my dad lived he only had the main things like bikes, cars, trains, plains but not the Modern transportations like we have now,(i.e the Skytrain).

Obviosly, our generation has a lot more advantages than our parent's but there were some positives about living in an civilaztion then. The place where my Dad used to live was a very small society, and so all the people new each other well and were a friendly and cooperative community. In Bangkok, everyone is also friendly and collaborative but we are not that close to everyone around us, its more like every man for himself in a urban community! Because everyone was like family to everyone back then, each celebration used to be celebrated with enthuasiasm and participation as big as ten 2010 generation celebrations combined!
As many differences as there are between the 1970's and now, there are quite a few similarities. Even though my dad grew up in a small community it was a multi-ethinic one, like mine! There were all kinds of people with different religions and beliefs. As I said before, my dad's society was a very close and friendly one, and there were people with different religions. Therefore my dad used to have festivals or celebrations nearly every month, even if the festival was not part of his culture. One thing I find nt fair was that it was a safe community back then and during celebrations my parent's parents would give my parents a certain amount of money and they could go spend it anywhere, left alone whereas here I always have to have some sort of supervision!

Similar to today, my dad's parent's were part of many clubs and groups. One Club they were part of was a International Rotary Club, that still exists today. It is a charity group that finds creative ways of fundraising and uses that money to sponsor villages and buy things for less priveleged people. That is VERY similar to today, the only difference was that then the charities and things like that were mainly only run by adults, but now its run by children even more in fact! Some examples of groups that we are part of today: Habitat for Humanity, Hope for Haiti, Unicef etc.

When my dad was young to entertain himself he used to listen to the radio, (Which is similar to listening to your ipods today), go cycling in the parks, create plays with his brother and friends for his parent's and relatives to watch, go for Bollywood Movies, play Boardgames, Cricket with friends, Picnicks and more. The majority of my dad's ways to have fun did not involve technology. My dad's house had quite a few forms of technology like the tape recorder, Fan, Cordless Phone and my Dad's house was the first in the area to get a refrigerator! But not all of these things could be used for playing, most of them were for general use, unlike today, where we have PSP's, Ipods, TV's, DS's and Computer Games etc. I am not amazed how my parent's lived without so much technology as today because they always found there ways of enjoyment and they did survive without any problems!

  15. My parent's life when they were kids are a bit different from my life now. They lived in Thailand but in a different location in Thailand. My parents lived in the 1970's. My parent's life wasn't as easy as my life like now because the telephone was just invented and it was big as a water bottle and the technology wasn't as developed as now.

    Similarities
One of the things that are similar between my parent's life and mine is that both of our school that we go to has early years, elementary and secondary. Both of the school that we go to teaches Thai but my parent's school teaches more Thai than my school.
Another thing that is the same is that the same king which is King Rama 9 ruled the country when my parent is a kid and he still rules the country now. He is treated very well when he ruled the country.

    Differences
One of the different things between my parent's life and my life was that my mom goes to a girl-only catholic school but I go to an International school that has both boys and girls. My mom's school has a lot more students than my school.
Another thing that is different is the things we use to entertain ourselves, I have computers, psp and other electronice devices to entertain myself but my mom likes to draw if she is by herself but if she is with her family she likes to talk with them or run around outside.
The last thing that is different is that my mom has eight members in her family, three girls, three boys and her parents so she can play a lot of things together but there are only four members in my family so I have only my younger brother to play with.

I have learned that lots of things have been invented and developed so that my life can be a lot easier than my parent's life. I feel very lucky to be born in this time and have lots of things to do.

  16. our mother's family didn't settle in one place because my grandfather was government agents and he had to move a lot of place to check how people are doing there and to check some of the problems in there. although it was just 25 years ago, my mom's life was a lot different and also similar to mine.

In that time, there were many difference in laws. First, they had this law in my mother's time that people weren't allowed to go anywhere after midnight because there were many crimes and organizations in that time that were bad and always mocked the president because he used weapons and soldiers and became president. But now days, people are allowed to do anything after midnight(well, not crime...) Second, there was this another law that people weren't allowed to go to other additional educational institutes except school because the president thought it wasn't fair for poor people to get bad job because they didn't have enough money to go to institutes. But, today in Korea almost all the people in Seoul metropolitan area send their children to institute and government has announced that they totally spend more than a billion dollars. Last, if you don't follow any of these laws above you get punished a lot. for example, they hit you with whip or you had yo pay a lot of money to avoid hitting with whip. But, if police hit people in now days, they get punished and police have to pay money instead of that person.

However, there are some laws that is still existing today. First, in that time they weren't allowed to have alcohols in their car and drive because they might cause an big accident. Today, it's similar but they use technology to check becuase people might throw empty can of beer out just before checking. Second, they weren't allowed to trash anything to environment because in that time, Korea was suffering a lot from environmental problem and even president made this campaign called 'plant trees' becuase after 6.25 war, there weren't any trees left in mountain and these environments caused a lot of problem. Today, it's same but it's more strict than before because people now days are more cunning and like fox.

After interviewing my mom and writing this, I learnt many laws that existed when my mom was young but disappeared, but also some laws that exists today too. I feel very proud and lucky to write this and show this to other people becuase there aren't many people who know about laws in Korea.

When my parents were young they lived in England. Both of them lived in villages within a city. My Mum lived in Littleover,Derby and my Dad lived in Guisely,Leeds.

I think the technology with regard to housing has stayed the same, because people are still living in apartments, detached houses, Semi detached houses and bungalows.

Both my parents went to good schools where they were able to obtain qualifications. This meant that they had choices as to which job they would like to do. I also am getting a good education at NIST and hopefully will be able to do a job I enjoy.

The biggest difference is with communication in society. When my parents were young there were no mobile phones. Telephones were only in your house or you had to use a public pay phone. People also sent letters and postcards via the post, emails and computers were not available then. My parents listened to music on the radio or on their record player. My dad saved all his pocket money to buy a record player and it was the first big item he ever brought. Today music can be listened to on laptops, PSP's, mobile phones, i pods and CD's. My parents both had televisions at home but remember them changing from black and white to color TV. After talking to my parents I realized that they had more freedom as children to play outside on the street and go off on their bikes. Sometimes they were gone all day and their parents had no idea where they were and no way of contacting them. Because I live in Bangkok and the traffic is heavy on the roads, I am not allowed at the moment to ride my bike on the streets. I can play safely within my compound, but cannot go out onto the streets by myself like my parents did.
