7B Oral History Reponse

In your reflection please answer the following two questions.
Make sure the Venn diagram provided to help you sort your ideas first. Then write them in your reflection.

1.What does your interview tell you about your parent's or guardian's civilization when they were young.

2.When you compare your life with your parent's choose two things that have remained the same and three things that are different.

19 comments:

  1. 1. The interview told me that my dad lived in a very different generation and how that he had in some ways had a better life e.g. they were trusted more and played outside which falls under community but in other ways sometimes bad e.g. little tecnology and primitive ways of communication the highest rate of technology he had was a casette player which also both fall under tecnology

    2. Cultural Similarities:
Children still like looking at picture books, and still like same types of music even if the bands names have changed. Goes under arts and Culture

    3. How Community has changed:
Children were more trusted by adults when my father was young. For example, he was allowed to buy cigarettes for his grandma even though he was 8 years old. Children used to play outdoors much more. People thought it was safe to play in the streets even after it got dark. Goes under social structures. Also music was made using electric keyboards now electric guitars.

    4. Technological changes:
Technology these days is better, cheaper and faster technology. It’s everywhere now. Technology used to be for adults, not for children. Goes under technology

  2. 1.
I have learned that my mom had a lot of differences to my life. My mom explained to me what life was like when she was young and why it was like that. This interview has told me that my mom's life is very weird and different. Her life as a child must have been hard. I have learned that my mom also wrte in English like me. I have learned that my mom only had one game system called the Atari. I learned that my mom had only lived in an Indian and Sikh community and no a mixed community.

    2.
    Community:
My mom had lived in a Indian and Sikh community.
Curfew- couldn't go out after midnight.
Women had to buy movie tickets in a different line than men. I live in a mixed community and there is no curfew so I can go out after midnight.

    Technology:
My mom only had the Atari as a game system and now we have nintendo gameboy, nintendo DS, nintendo WII, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Computer. Today the games are totally different then what they had back then. Our Technology is more sophisticated.

    Government and Laws:
In school, girls had to have their hair braided and tied with a ribbon. The girls weren't allowed to talk to boys because it was a girls school. For Religion, You can't marry people outside your religion. These days, the girls didn't have to braid their hair and tie it with a ribbon. We can talk to anybody of any gender. You can marry anybody outside your religion.

The things that have remained the same are that we both have transportation like cars, buses, bicycles, Trains and Airplanes. We had same recreational activities like Bowling, Shopping, Picnics and Movies. We both write in Engish.

  3. 1)My interview with my dad told me that there weren't a lot of cars, because he could always play on the street safely and almost nobody had a car. The communities were much smaller because he could go to the center of town in 10 minutes on a bike. Most of the people were Roman Catholic or Protestant. It also told me that Motorola made one of the first cellphones in Holland
    2a)2 Similiar things:
The 2 things that are sort of the same in my Parent's Civilization and my civilization are that there are still a lot of Roman Catholics and Protestants in Holland. Only now Christian, Jews, and other religions are also in Holland.Another same thing is you can still play outside safely, but not on the road. You can play in your garden, or if you live in an apartment you can play by the pool or on the parking lot.
    2b)3 Different things:
There are a lot of different things, but i can only describe 3. The first one is that now that there is a lot more technology. Now there is even too many cars. Almost every household has a tv, telephone, radio, and car. The bad things about this is that it costs a lot of money for everything, and you cant play outside anymore because there are too many cars. The good thing is you can communicate with everyone arond the world, better trasportation, and you can find out things easily with computers and the internet. One more difference is there are a lot bigger communities. My dad's community had only sixty thousnad people, and Bangkok has eight million people. Bigger communities means more stores, more and bigger buildings, more schools, more theft, more things to do, basically more of everyting. The last different thing i'm going to talk about is that now there are a lot more religions than just Roman Catholic and Protestant. Now in one community there are probably at least one person of every religion.

  4. Interview with my parents
By Jamie Scorer 7B Yellow house NIST (New International School of Thailand)
I learn’t that my mom’s civilization has a big difference to my civilization because my mom’s house is near the beach side, my mom lives in a big village which has approximately 100 or more houses, the houses in mom’s civilization are made out wood, but there some similarities between my civilization because when my mom was young, in her civilization, there are T.Vs, cars, electric rice pot, radio, and the cinema, this tells me that when mom was young, there were quite a lot of technologies in her civilization. In my mom’s civilization, there are lots of nice people and lots of trees there, so her civilization is quite natural and a good enviroment to live in. In my mom’s civilization there is about 300 or less people who live in her village which has a difference to my civilization because my civilization have about 10 million people who live in Bangkok, 1 more thing that is the same between my mom’s civilization and my civilization is the khlongs, there are still lots khlongs near my mom’s house.

  5. I have interviewed my mom Seema Sachdev.
    1.
I learned from my mom’s civilization that they didn’t have as many privileges that we do. That in my mom’s time when she was young it was much harder than it is right now in my civilization.

    2.
    Technology:
My civilization has more advanced technology than the technology my mom’s civilization had when she was about 11 years old. I think it was different because they didn’t have the tools to create technology like we have today in our civilization. The similarities between the technology we have now and the technology that they had in my mom’s civilization are some old people still have the same technology they had in my mom’s civilization. Like the old sewing machine that they use to use in my mom’s civilization when she was young.

    Religion:
There is only a similarity for religion. Which is we had to go to the temple very often.

    Community:
My mom had to go to boarding school called Whimeberg Allen in India. In my mom’s school they only allowed you to take a shower 2 days a week and wash her hair once a week, also she could only do her laundry once a week also. The difference between my civilization and my mom’s civilization is everything I just wrote. There are no similarities. Her parents were very strict with her but my mom isn’t very strict with me.

    1. From my interview, I learned that my parent's civilizations are low compared to now. Architectures were flat, short and made out of wood at that time. There were low technology which means there are no computers and hardly any electronic equipment. You have to use typewriters to type. There were not as much laws. The communities were smaller because there are less global issues. There were only water, air and voice pollution.

    2. The things that have changed or are different were technology, architecture and writing. There were no computers, mobile phones and hardly any electrical equipment at that time but now, they're everywhere. There were no tall buildings compared to now. Teachers use blackboards and chalks to write but now, they use smart boards!!!

The similarities are religion and law. The things we had to do about religion are the same. We still have to go to wats. Some Thai male still become monks. Kids still have to attend school for a certain age. People can't smoke at certain places.

  7. 1. What does your interview tell you about your parents or guardians civilization when they were young?

For this activity I interviewed my mom and she told my many things about her civilization.

The things I learnt about my mom’s civilizations are…..

    Community
My mom’s community was not really big until people moved from neighboring, cities, towns, villages to find a in a big city. Then the civilizations grew also different communities grew. The houses that were there when my mom was young were wooden houses on stilts, flats (3 or 4 stories of house) and not really high rise buildings, but in 1986 there were many high buildings there were about 29 floors in one building.

    Government/ Laws
When my mom was young the laws were that children from the age of 2 and up can go to school. The government made a law that the school my mom went to studied for 120 days.

    Religion
My mom studied in a convent school so she had to pray before every meal and go to the Chapel every evening to pray there. In school my mom’s teachers were very religious they used to pray in the morning assemblies, pray before every meal and before going to bed.

    Writing
In my mom’s school they were hardly any computers so the hand writing was very important in those days and my mom’s handwriting was neat and still neat now. The slangs they had in the school my mom went to were shut up, Dumbo, Idiot and other ones but they are in Hindi.

    Art, Architecture and Literature
The buildings in those times were not tall at all the elevator in those times were slow and hot. The show and plays they had in those times were Shakespeare’s plays and plays of behavior and teaching a lesson play.

    Social Structure
In the school my mom went to they are about 300 students and 30 in one class. In the school my mom went to they were leadership roles for being good. The society my mom lived in was not that big until 1984 the city was huge.

    Technology
In my mom’s school they were not that many computers to use and they were old style. In the school my mom went to they were proper lights but they will go off during winter. They was also a phone in the principal’s office to call the parents if the student did something bad or if the students got bad injury. In my mom’s times if there was an emergency they would phone call the person with and old fashion phone or they used to telegram people.

  8. 1. I interviewed my mom, and I got to learn that my mom used a computer but then there was no windows, they had to learn how to make programs. She said it was very hard to do. For us we neither do nor do that we type on Microsoft word or power point. I did not know that When my mom was my age the tallest Building was Ambassador Hotel tower Wings. I got to know that my Mom Schools name Changed. There school was so much Smaller to our School. There school was only 2 buildings. One was an elementary building and the other one was the secondary building. The supervising thing was that she Was born in India and after that living in Bangkok.

    2. The things me and my mom have in conman are we both used a computer. We have both, been to the tallest building. We both speak English, Hindi Sindi. We both go to the temples. The differences are I got my first mobile when I was 8. My mom got it when she got married. I learnt humanities she did too.

  9. 1. THINGS THAT I LEARNED ABOUT MY MOM’S CIVILIZATIONS ARE….

    Community:
My mom’s community wasn’t a proper community it wasn’t a proper society. Since it wasn’t a proper community they never thought if they could have more people to come in and live in the houses around my mom’s house. My mom never knew if it were a proper community because they lived in joint families which were really large so they mostly spent time at home with their family members who made it like an inside house community. Sometimes my mom’s friends came home for just hanging out. But people were invited for festivals or ceremonies at home.
    Government and laws:
The government hired low cast people to work for the families in the area most probably to clean the toilets. Sometimes the families would give them a tip like some money, leftover food, extra clothes etc. The low cast people did this job because they were far away from getting a proper job because they didn’t get education so they just worked for the colony.
    Religion:
The people living around my mom’s house weren’t from the same religion but they sure were vegetarian. They didn’t have a different group containing only their religion people. Maybe there weren’t many people from the same religion. The way my mom learnt about her religion was from many different ways like her parents, relatives, festivals, ceremonies and functions.
    Writing:
everyone in my mom’s young age had to write letters to communicate. The really enjoyed writing letters to each other in fact they loved it. There was no phone. They usually wrote letters to their far away relatives only, because they didn’t have any one else to write it to. My mom use to write in Hindi because she knew no other language.
    Culture:
My mom use to learn art like stitching, embroidery and painting. My mom said that she didn’t learn painting but she still is very good at it. My mom use to learn literature in Hindi. She learnt Hindi poems, Hindi novels etc.
    Social structure:
They didn’t need a leader since they didn’t have a proper community they never ever thought of a concept to make a leader. They didn’t want to rank people. There were jobs for people, like I said before the low cast people cleaned the toilets.
    Technology:
My mom use to have a radio which had songs and daily news in it. When she was around 15-16 she felt that technology has started to change when the TV came which was the black and white one. My mom’s family couldn’t afford till 5 years of the invention.
    2. Similarities and differences
    Differences:
The first difference was that in my mom’s time the government hired low cast people to clean the toilets of other family’s houses in the area. Now we hire maids and we are the ones who pay not the government. Not only do the maids clean toilets they do all the work of the house like cleaning the house, tidying the bed or make food. They mostly do all the work of the house. The second difference is that my mom’s community wasn’t a proper community. She still had friends but they lived far away. Now we live in a colony full of people it is a perfect community, a perfect society. All my friends live there and we all play downstairs in the evening some of them are in my school too. Some of my mom’s friends also live near our building so she could visit them any time. My mom walks down in the evening regularly and sometimes if she sees her friends she walks with them. The Third and last difference is that the people living around my mom’s house weren’t from the same religion and she didn’t have another group including only the people from her religion.
    Similarities:
The first similarity is that my mom and I learned about our religions from the same resources which were our parents, relatives, festivals, functions and ceremonies. The second similarity is we both can write in Hindi and English except she learnt it from her mom and I learnt it from my mom and I learnt in school too.

    Similarities and Differences

The two thing similarities that are the same between my mom and me are that the slang’s that they had were the same and the civilization grew with many people moving from neighboring, cities, towns and villages. The three differences between my mom and me are that she went to a convent school with only girls in the school and I am studying in an international school with boys and girls in it. The other difference is that my mom had only 300 students in her school and I have 1500 to 2000 people in the school. The last difference is that in my times any age child can to school and my moms time children from the age of 2 are allowed to go to school.

  11. Introduction
My grandmother name is “Vanaja Anaanatharaman” she has lived in India her entire life until she met my grandfather. Then she lived in London for about 2-3 years, later they shifted to Singapore, a few years of living in Singapore my mother was given birth to “Priya Anaanatharaman” then they shifted back to India and sometime later he died my grandmother raised my mother and her brother on her own. She went through the fight Mrs. Indra Gandhi killed by her bodyguard.

I learnt from my grandmother that their life was no way similar to mine. You see, that when my grandmother was born a long time back, there was no iPods, Computers, G-shock and Tablets. One important fact is that we are like the most lucky people in the world because most of probably could not afford stuff like this. But they must have done that so that they could give you all of this hospitality. Instead whatever they had must have been just a backpack with few books in it. At that time the way probably for to listen to an iPod was by playing with friends or going to a temple\Church. They probably had to live in a small community; these days if you see the size of communities they are so big. They had no way of keeping track of how to keep contact besides using a pay phone or have to own a phone. But in those days the currency was so that you needed to have enough to live because the world was so undeveloped in those old days. Now look how advanced we are.
My grandmother also played board games like me. For example scrabble, snakes and ladders, ludo, monopoly and carrom. They also played cards, badminton and football. They sometimes played old games with shells. She wore uniforms to school everyday. These are two similarities.
The three different things are cell phones, iPod Touch and Computers, all of which I have but she never did as a child. See, all of the stuff that I am using these days is Touch screen technology and portable. Because I don’t think that they had any type of portable device, they probably had pay phones which are not even portable. Also when you see how I am writing, I have written a whole load more than the similarities, because by the time we were born, all of this is already there. You can see that I am more interested in Touch screen technology than uniforms. I think that everyone else would have also written more differences than similarities.

  14. Interview with my parents by Buddy Chawanwit Karoonyavanich (orange house 7B NIST)
    1. When I interviewed my parents, it told me a lot of things about when they were young like how they lived, how they talk and all sorts of things. I also learned that it was way harder to do stuff at those times.
    2. The two things which are the same are there is not much discrimination and the second is that rich people are more powerful than poor people (even though now some organizations are trying to even it up). There is not much discrimination because that Thailand is normally a place of different people, so if there is discrimination this might result to a riot. This has remained the same since my parents’ days. Then is the other one, the Rich people are more powerful than poor people. This theory still goes on, and organizations attempt to end it. The theory is not ended yet, and poor people are basically poverty. Obviously poverty is still here, so this similarity stays similar to present days.
The 3 different things about our civilizations are that our houses are bigger and more private than my mother/fathers. This could end up good or bad because that you have less privacy but on the other hand you develop better relationships to your neighbors since you meet them very often.
The second different thing I want to tell you is that the Government. Back when my parents were children, the Thai Government didn’t have any major flaws or issues, compared to today’s government, having political and environmental problems (Taxin, oil, drugs and others).
The third and last difference is that in my parent’s times there was not much transportation, so going place to place was harder. But now, they have too much transportations, that going place to place was still harder because that there are way too much cars and that there should be less cars, since these are making an environmental impact.

  15. After interviewing my mom (Zai Jearrajinda) this is what I know

    Community

In Thailand when my mom was 12 years old there were about 45million people but now there are about 67 million people so now the community is bigger. My mom is in the Buddhist community.

    Government & Laws

Since my mom was born 30 governments changed and my mom likes the law that stop people from smoking in the restaurant.

    Organized religion

My mom practices her religion by going to the Wat and offering food to the monks since when she was little until now. I also do it because sometimes it makes me happy. Our religion isn’t that strict for some people so for me we should go to the Wat at least 2 a month. Most of the time when my mom goes to the Wat I go with her

    Art architecture & literature

The best painting that my mom made is a picture of a forest, when I look at it closely it doesn’t look like a forest but when I look at it 2 meters away it looks a forest. When my mom paints it makes her calm down but when I draw and it turns wrong I feel bad about it.

    Technology

When my mom was in year 10 there wasn’t a lot of people and cars so she drove her car to school by herself!! But now there are a lot of cars so I don’t think that I will drive a car when I’m in year 10. Her best electronic toy is the 1st play station from Hong Kong, my favorite electronic to is Nintendo DS and WII.

    ORAL HISTORY (INTERVIEW)
    BY: Maria Teresa Hotte Massara
    7B PURPLE HOUSE
    I interviewed my mother.
The similarities between my mother’s and my civilizations are:
    Technological Similarities and Changes –
(What did I learn about the similarities and changes in technology in our civilizations?)
The similarities in technology are that when my mother was small the radio, the television existed and the telephone and now they still exist.
The changes in technology is that now we have computers, video games, mobile phones and all sorts of devices which now exist but didn’t exist before.
Similarities and the changes in the community.
Similarities and the changes in the community-
(What did I learn about my mother’s community? What did I learn about the changes and similarities in the community?)
The similarities in the community are that children like to play, like to read and love to watch TV. Exactly like the children in our civilization.
The changes in the community are that kids had more freedom, less homework and had space (ex: gardens, streets with no dangers). The kids after school went home to finish their homework (which took 30 minutes to finish) and went to play in their gardens, streets with their friends. Now children don’t have space for gardens to play in and they can’t play in the streets plus they spend all the afternoon finishing their home work.
    Similarities and changes in writing-
(What did I learn about the changes in writing and learning how to write now and before?)
The similarities are that the way of writing is the same and people still communicate using writing.
The changes are that people learn how to write different languages and they sometimes learn to write many languages perfectly.
    Organized Religion
(Was my mom forced to practice a religion?)
The similarities are that when my mother was small she was not forced to follow a religion she followed the religion of her parents like I do.
    There are no changes
    Culture (art, architecture and literature)
    (What was the culture?)
The similarities are that kids like still to read (literature) there are forms of art and architecture.
The changes are that architecture changed style, same as art and books are written in how the new civilization likes them.
    Social Structure
    (Were there possibilities of socializing?)
Similarities people socialized and they also had friends
The changes are that people before trusted each other more

    Organized Government and laws
    (What were the laws placed?)
Similarities are that the laws are mostly the same
    There are no changes

  17. The Interveiw tells me that the differents between now and the past of our parents. It helps me to learn about how luckey we are now. It makes me imagin a world without an improved technology. But the bad thing is that when I mother was my age, there were no big globle warming like now. At that time, the electricity fee is very expensive so her whole family didn't use airconditioner.

I compare my life with my parent, the three differet things are: Not using airconditioner, Not many homework, No shopping mall. And two same things are: She go to school and she use pencil to write. Because when I first interview her I thought that she use the chinese brush to write but I think too far.

    Large community groups:
My mother has many best friends that are her neiboars. She use to play with them when she is at 6 years old. They never go out to shop because there are no shopping malls before. So if she wants to go out and play, they will go to the playground.

    Organized government & laws:
There are rules and it was strick for children, but not for the adult. One of the rule that is strick is that you cannot say bad stuff about the goverment or else you will get punishment.

    Organized Religion:
My mother her whole family believe in Buddism. Also now, my family always believes in buddism. At that year, the most famouse religion in Taiwa is Buddism.

    Writing:
There are not many homework when my mother is at school. She don't have much homework because all the children at that year, will have to help their parents to take care of brother and sister.

    Culture:
She use colur penicil, paint brush and craiyon to draw arts. My mother tells me that she use to like drawing when she was at my age. She likes to draw manga characters just like me. But now she said that she hate drawing because its too hard.

    Technology:
There are electricity, but it is not improved. At summer, Taiwan is very hot. But they don't have airconditioner, because it is too expensive. So at summer time, to make them not to get hot, is that they buy a big ice cube and put it in front of the electricfan.

I think the world had improve so much that I feel I am so lucky.

  18. I interviewed my Dad
    1. It tells me that the now the world has a bit more freedom and it has also become a better and easier place.
    2.
The similarities between my dad’s and my civilization are,
That there were some technology things, like telephones, radios, T.V, and they still exist. They also had recorders but in that time they were so expensive.
The buildings before were not that high enough, they were made by bricks and muds, some of the buildings were not strong but know they are.
We had similar education my dad learned how to speak English and Hindi (he had to choose Hindi).
    My dad’s civilization
When my dad had to print something he use to go to this shop which had this machine called type writer, It had a keyboard (it looked similar) and you had to put a paper inside, and type what you wanted to type when you’re done the paper comes out with what you typed (you couldn’t touch the writing until it was dried or else the writing will be spoiled).
The laws before in India, you could not bring show peaces or even articles from the other country, but know you can buy any thing and bring it to any countries you want.

My interview with my dad told me about that in his civilization mostly everything is expensive. His house was made of wood. Technology was simple and that it is hard in his civilization and lots of things in his civilization was expensive.

    2.
    simmilarities:
The similarities from my civilization and my dads was that We both went to school to learn different subjects just like what I do. We both lived in a house so we could sleep in and eat.

    Differences:
The difference between I and my dads civilization is that My dad lived in a village with small houses and alot of trees and in my civilization I live in a big city with factories, alot of buildings and etc. The other difference from me and my dads civilization is that we had different school weekends such as my weekends are on saturdays and sundays but my dads weekend are on Fridays and sundays. The last difference from me and my dad is that The technology in my civilization is faster better and easy to use but in my dads time technology was simple, hard to use and is expensive
